| Police looking for man who crashed stolen car |

By Stephanie Spyropoulos, Express Contributor Police are still looking for a male suspect who ran from the scene Sunday after crashing a stolen vehicle into a utility pole on West Elm Street. Pembroke Police responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident after receiving numerous 9-1-1 calls around 10:35 a.m., according to Pembroke Police Lt. Mike Jenness. “We received a report of an MVA [motor vehicle accident] with a car that had rolled over and struck a pole,” he said. The accident occurred near 278 West Elm Street. A white male approximately 5’8”, in his 30s, with a crew cut and wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans was seen running on Dwelley Street in the opposite direction from the accident. “Passing motorists were near the accident scene and witnessed the male party running,” Jenness said. Officers searched the area and were unable to locate anyone. The accident cut the telephone pole in half and closed the road temporarily. The vehicle, which earlier was reported stolen from the parking lot at Myette’s in Hanover, was heavily damaged in the crash. “It was reported that a female had her vehicle stolen and the keys were in the car,” Jenness said. “We believe he did take the car and crashed on West Elm Street.” Although traffic was re-routed for a short time, several homes were blocked by fallen wires and work being done at the accident scene. Ellyn Leonard of Farmside Drive sat in her truck waiting for permission to pass through to her neighborhood on the other side of the accident scene. “I am just going to sit here and make the best, “said Leonard, who arrived after the accident had occurred and did not see what happened. West Elm resident Mary Ford stood outside talking with Leonard. She has lived in her home since 1985 and said she often hears screeches on the sharp corner, which creeps up on many drivers unfamiliar with the windy road. During the accident investigation on West Elm Street, a man approached the officers and said he had been driving slowly because of the traffic backup when a white male, wearing a white sweatshirt, came up to his car, said he needed a ride and jumped in the car. “He reportedly yelled to the operator, ‘Drive!’” Jenness said. The operator only went about 10 yards and stopped. The male then got out of the car and ran down Dwelley Street. “We are working closely with Hanover Police to try to locate this suspect,” Jenness said. “We are reviewing video and wish to speak with anyone who may have seen this individual prior to the vehicle being taken.” Anyone who might have seen the individual or who has information regarding the accident is encouraged to call Officer Gregory Burns at Pembroke Police Department at 781-293-6363. |
