Girls basketball team shows spark in loss to Dragons

With their second new coach in as many seasons and a virtually overhauled roster, no one expected the largely inexperienced girls basketball team to skyrocket out of the basement of the Fisher Division this season. But as head coach Melissa Murphy said on Friday, the signs are there that the team is getting better.

spo-p-gb1The Lady Titans suffered their 10th league loss of the season at the high school on Friday, 47-35, at the hands of the Duxbury Dragons, a team that embarrassed Pembroke last season by over 30 points.

“Last year we lost by almost 40 points, so to lose by 12 is a great accomplishment for the girls,” Murphy said. “We had a great week. We played well against Hingham, and playing well against Duxbury is always a challenge.”

The Titans didn’t get much offense to start the game, scoring nine points in the first quarter, but they clamped down on defense to hold to just four. But Duxbury’s half-court and full-court press stymied Pembroke in the second quarter, when Duxbury outscored Pembroke 18-7 to take the lead for good.

“We had a lead and then the pressure got to us,” Murphy said. “The story of this year is that, as soon as someone puts a press on us, we crumble. We turned the ball over, and they capitalized on it.”

After scoring just one basket in the first half, captain Brittany Tworig carried the Titans in the second half, scoring 13 points over the final two frames. But the Titans could not cut the lead to within two possessions for the rest of the game, and Duxbury ran their seven-point lead after three quarters to 12 by the end of the game.

The Titans had a bit of a letdown on Tuesday, losing to second-place Quincy 71-30, but with the team improving each game and no graduating seniors, Murphy is confident the tide will turn for the Titans soon as they now have the stability they have lacked for years.

“They are definitely getting better,” she said. “They are making progress, just not winning games yet.”
